This week we’d like to shine the spotlight on one of our favorite Chicago-area stores that carries a wide variety of Ceaco and Gamewright products, Becky & Me Toys. Becky & Me was founded in 2002 by Peggy Sebert and her daughter Becky. Like Gamewright, the store is committed to encouraging play that is real (not virtual), that is active and creative, and that is focused on the concerns, ideas, and interests of children. We had the chance to hear from Peggy about her successes and challenges. With locations now in Glenview and Evanston, Chicago locals should be sure to check out their selection!
Why did you decide to open Becky & Me?
After teaching for 15 years, then staying home to raise Becky, I became a manager and buyer for a specialty toy store. It became my passion. Becky quickly became my right hand girl, volunteering regularly in the store starting at the age of 13. We both love books, games, toys, and of course kids, so when an opportunity arose, we decided to open our own store.
You currently have 2 stores Do you plan to open more stores in the future?
We do not plan to expand. 2 is the perfect number for us!
What are the challenges of owning a specialty shop?
A major challenge is teaching consumers the importance of shopping local versus big box or on the internet. When they come in our stores, we know our products, we explain and play games with them, and their purchases support the local economy.
What is the most rewarding part?
The most rewarding part is seeing a product that we think is great become a success. It’s a wonderful feeling to see a child’s excitement when he/she comes in the store and loves our products. We enjoy helping parents, grandparents, and friends find perfect gifts for the special kids in their lives. We love when customers come back and share success stories about the products we helped them find.
Becky & Me has a great selection of Gamewright products! What are your best selling Ceaco and Gamewright products? Do you have any personal favorites?
We love so many Gamewright games, this is hard to answer! Some of your classic best sellers that we’ve carried for many years include Slamwich, Rat-a-Tat Cat, Wig Out and Sleeping Queens. Some new favorites are Elephant’s Trunk, Rory’s Story Cubes and Too Many Monkeys. Becky’s personal favorite is Slamwich. She’s hard to beat at it. When she was 12, her uncle got so frustrated playing it with her that he sat her in a low chair at a high table and shined a bright lamp in her face. He still couldn’t win!
Peggy loves Three of a Crime (which is no longer available) and Wig Out. We also love Ceaco‘s Pieceless Puzzles, Puzzle Stix and Blox, and Baffler.
And now to announce the winner of our last contest for a copy of The Big Fat Tomato Game – Judy B. loves to make homemade sauce from tomatoes she grows. Congratulations Judy!
